Hud-Campus Project - Cafe

Design Brief

A campus cafe that provides a comfortable and inviting space for students and faculty to enjoy high-quality coffee and light fare while fostering a sense of community. By creating a user-focused design concept and develop this using 2D and 3D development tools.

Design Precedent #1

PRADA Cafe - Harrods

  • As you enter the cafe the countertop is decorated with textural, pebbled panelling used to display branded patisseries that are presented like individual pieces of jewellery - This is a key aspect i would like to take further with my design ideas as it represents a sense of luxury but also practical for the costumers to see the products displayed within.

  • Another key aspect of the design within the cafe is the use of eau-de-nil Japanese porcelain and blown-glass sporting prada triangular pattern throughout the interior. Which would be a interesting aspect to take forward as it clearly distinguishes the fashion designer brand.

  • The cafe has a repeated checkered pattern on the floor tiles (in nod to floors of prada boutique in Milan) which could be a clear representation of sophisticated elements in my design. This is also shown with the floral reliefs covering the walls and ceilings in the signature “prada green” which explained aims to evoke the look of prada stores.

Design Precedent #2

Esmée - Copenhagen

  • The tones and materials Space Copenhagen have used a more of a lighter aesthetic, with pale tones, natural materials and lots of plants giving off a naturalistic appearance. This key aspect is another feature i will be taking into consideration in my design as a sense of calm and relief, also relating to Copenhagen's passion for sustainability.

  • Plants and trees are featured throughout this space bringing in additional emphasis. Space chose green and lead patterned textiles, while wall panels in a deep fern-green to represent the greenery. “Creating a light and naturalistic tapestry” which is a unique feature i intend on taking further with my design.

  • Within the design of the Esmée different areas have their own character. By the use of a darker palette. This is something i feel could be useful in my design to indicate which areas are for social usage and for focused study/work.

Concept Collage

The concept collage for this project was developed through photoshop using a variety of inspiration images layered upon each other. Getting a greater feel of the space to be by the use of materials, colours and furniture.
