Cultures of Hub_Part 2

Cultures of Hub_ Part 2 explores the design brief in more depth. Building on the idea developed in Part 1, this phase emphasises translating the “furnitecture” design into a industry-standard technical drawing.

Including construction, detail research and development. Design proposal development to scale through 2D orthographic drawing

Visual References

My visual references centred around exploring the interplay of light. I investigated how various shapes and shadows can interact with light. The primary emphasis was on the wing-like structure, connecting to the theme “The Fragility of Flight.” Additionally, I incorporated organic curves and the intricate beauty found in nature.

Design Precedents

The V&A courtyard installation showcases design inspired by nature, prominently featuring a net-like structure that mimics the intricate details of insect wings. Crafted from glass and carbon fiber, each element of this structure is created through an innovative robotic winding technique devised by the designers.

Construction detailing/ information:

The selected material is flexi-plywood, made up of layers of thin plies with a thickness of 5 mm. Steaming can often enhance the pliability of these thin sheets.

The flexi-plywood is shaped into the model using clamps and a form crafted from MDF wood, secured with a ratchet strap.

Note: Excessive bending may jeopardize the tension.

2D Orthographic Calculations

2D Orthographic calculations were necessary to develop the model further in SketchUp. I found each piece had to be constructed individually as they are all different heights, widths and lengths. These calculation had to be constructed on AutoCAD then exported to SketchUp for digital model making.
